American Idol season 23
After months of auditions, emotional performances, and tough eliminations, this season of American Idol came down to two finalists: a PE teacher and a college student. And now, America has spoken. The winner of American Idol is Jamal Roberts—a 27-year-old father of three from Mississippi who spends his days teaching physical education and inspiring young minds.
Holding his trophy with disbelief and joy, Jamal said,
“You’re holding that like an Oscar,” someone told him.
“It is an Oscar,” he replied with a laugh. “This is a dream coming true. I’m so thankful.”
Jamal’s journey wasn’t easy.
“I always had faith,” he said. “I knew it was going to be a ride. If I wanted to be the American Idol, I had to buckle up, sit in the passenger seat, and enjoy it. I did this for my kids, my hometown, and the state of Mississippi.”
Throughout the season, Jamal wowed the judges and America with his powerful voice and emotional depth. One judge said,
“If there are 20 different aspects to singing, Jamal has every single one of them. And then, when you factor in emotion? He’s got that too.”
Another added,
“He treated this like a sport—he practiced hard, showed up every time, and gave it everything he had. He’s got a whole toolbox of talent.”
This year’s finale also broke records, drawing 26 million votes, the most in ABC’s American Idol history—double last year’s total.
And while Jamal took home the title, the runner-up walked away with something just as meaningful.
“I feel peace and satisfaction,” they said. “This journey gave me exactly what I need to build a career in country music, and that’s what I’ll do for the rest of my life.”
So, another unforgettable season of American Idol comes to a close. But the show will be back next year—and if this season was any sign, the talent will be just as fierce.
