Since Rockstar unexpectedly released the GTA 6 trailer, excitement for the studio’s next game has skyrocketed. Although the release of Grand Theft Auto has been postponed, we have received our best look yet at cutscenes, gameplay, and screenshots. A former Rockstar developer discusses the new images and shares how long the game has been in development.
Even with the Grand Theft Auto 6 release date set, there is still much to discover about Rockstar’s fictional Florida. Trailer 2 features both gameplay and cutscenes, showcasing stunning visuals of the sun-soaked beaches we have yet to explore. While we wait for GTA 6, former Rockstar artist David O’Reilly has reviewed the new screenshots of the open-world game and provided more insight into its development.
“I worked as an environment artist at Rockstar for 12 years. I left in 2023. I worked on GTA 6 from 2018 to 2023, after finishing [Red Dead Redemption 2],” O’Reilly explains.
“It’s interesting to see all of this because the lighting looks great. They added something special to it, making everything look different from when I last saw it. Most of my experience with [GTA 6] was in debug mode, which is a development setting.”
“It’s amazing, isn’t it? This is captured on a PS5, and I think it will show us what to expect at the release,” O’Reilly adds (via TheGamer).
From O’Reilly’s statements, it seems that Rockstar has been working on Grand Theft Auto 6 since at least 2018. Red Dead Redemption 2 was released that same year after several delays, so it’s likely that Rockstar began serious work on GTA 6 only after that game was released.
Be sure to watch all of O’Reilly’s video, as it offers great insights not just about GTA 6, but also about the game development process in general.
