PlayStation This Service SHUTTING DOWN Soon

Sony’s officially announced that they’re SHUTTING DOWN the current version of the PlayStation Stars loyalty program. They say they’re evaluating new ways to evolve their loyalty efforts, which, in plain terms, means this version of the program is being shut down. No new members can sign up starting today, and if you cancel your membership, you can’t rejoin. Current members can still earn points and digital collectibles until July 23, 2025, and the entire program will officially shut down on November 2, 2026.

They also mentioned that digital collectibles you’ve earned will still be viewable after the program ends. So that part’s not totally disappearing.

What do I think about all this?

Honestly, I liked the idea behind PlayStation Stars. I love the concept of loyalty programs, and I’m always down for anything that rewards players just for playing games. But let’s be real—the execution of this one wasn’t great.

The quests were kind of random and inconsistent. Some were fine, but a lot of them just didn’t feel rewarding. And trying to get enough points to actually redeem something worthwhile? That was a grind. Like, the amount of points needed to get something like Stellar Blade was insane. Most people just weren’t going to bother.

Here’s what I wish PlayStation would do next

Instead of focusing on these odd quests, why not keep it simple and reward players for doing what they’re already doing—playing games. Not every reward needs to be some massive discount or free game. Give us:

  • Cool themes tied to trophies.
  • Avatars for completing challenges.
  • Even something as simple as a dynamic background for earning a platinum in a big game.

And that brings me to my next point—why aren’t platinum trophies more valuable? Publishers always talk about player engagement. Well, what’s more engaging than someone going for the platinum trophy? That shows dedication. Why not reward that?

You could tie cool, exclusive rewards to platinum trophies—like a theme or avatar you can only get by completing 100% of a game. It doesn’t even have to be a huge financial giveaway. Just make it feel meaningful.

Tie it into PS Plus

They could also add some extra value for PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium subscribers. Something like, “Get 10 trophies from PS Plus games this month and get bonus points.” That way, you’re encouraging people to actually use the PS Plus catalog instead of letting it collect dust.

Final Thoughts

To me, loyalty programs should be about rewarding time and investment, not just giving people some random points for checking a box. I’m not asking Sony to give away free games left and right. But they can absolutely do more with small rewards that mean something to players. Digital collectibles are cool in theory—but they never really hit. Meanwhile, there’s so much untapped potential in simple things like themes, avatars, and customization.

So —PlayStation Stars as we know it is going away, but I really hope Sony uses this as a chance to build something better. Something more meaningful. Something that actually makes people feel like they’re part of a community—and that their time matters.

Let me know what you think. Would you want a loyalty program tied to trophies or time played? What kind of rewards would you like to see? Drop your thoughts below—I’d love to hear them.
